Data Analyst

The task of the data analyst contractor will be to support the work of the research and analysis team by providing technical expertise on data analytics principles and practices. The primary task will be to compile and analyze media data for weekly reports on the media environment in multiple countries in Central and Eastern Europe. The data will be used to support local analysts who have expertise in the social, political, and linguistic contexts of the given countries.

The role will be a contracted position and is anticipated to be a require at least 20 hours per week, however, a full-time level of effort may be needed based on the required tasks and skills of the contractor.

Tasks:

  • Reports to the Senior Analyst
  • Responsible for pre-processing media data from existing data providers (e.g., CrowdTangle, Pulsar) and collection of data through other APIs and tools on an ad hoc basis
  • Carrying out analysis on media data including, but not limited to:
    • Natural Language Processing
    • Social Network Analysis
    • K-means clustering
    • Text Classification
    • Topic Modelling
  • Creating data visualisations using ggplot, plotnine, and PowerBI
  • Working with Sr. Analyst and research teams to ensure methodologically sound approaches are used
  • Experiment with novel analytical approaches
  • Keeping up to date on trends in the above fields
  • Performs other duties as assigned

 

Candidate Requirements

  • A relevant degree or comparable work experience and portfolio
  • Proficient in R and Python languages
  • Familiarity with basic NLP and SNA tools and techniques
  • Experience in social and political applications of data analytics
  • Fluent English speaker
  • Willing to work from the office (central Brussels) and remotely from the rest of the team as needed

 

Additional beneficial skills:

  • Additional programming languages (html/CSS, SQL)
  • Familiarity with AWS and Google Cloud
  • Additional spoken languages (esp. Central and Eastern European languages)
  • Postgraduate degree in a relevant field
  • Interested in the topic of disinformation and malign influence
  • Experience working with the media sector
  • Experience in working with an international organization
